TV Everywhere (TVE) is now a reality

Are you out there watching the parades or at home watching on TV? Maybe you’re out there and trying to watch TV at the same time. If you have a tablet, phablet or even a high-end smartphone, you should be able to do both because TV Everywhere (TVE) is now a reality. Trouble is, that’s not really the case. While most of us (assuming we have the requisite hardware) can view select programming and newscasts, real TVE – one that provides a duplicate mobile experience to the one you get at home – is far from ready for prime time.

At least, that’s the view from Nottingham Communications, where we see digital rights management (DRM) still mired in financial and legal limbo – or so it seems to us. The technology’s there to deliver the programming that consumers demand, so what’s the problem here? Well, it turns out that even though your local BDU has negotiated re-broadcasting rights with the content owners, those privileges do not, necessarily, extend beyond your home or place of business. That will entail additional licensing (read money) and guess who’s going to pay?

To make matters worse, the DRM issue even extends to video on demand (VOD). So…if you forgot to PVR your favourite program you may not be able to catch up before the next episode.

All these issues and more will be examined and discussed in depth in our upcoming TVE Market Report scheduled for publication Summer 2013.
